This technique is so common in dance tracks that it’s almost a cliché that cannot be avoided. If you frequent raves, dance clubs, or electronic music festivals, you’re probably used to hearing claps, snares, toms, or kicks that start with quarter note hits, then speed up to eighth notes, and then finally reach for sixteenth and thirty-second notes as you get closer to the drop.

Evan Zwisler is a NYC-based musician who is most notably known for his work with The Values as a songwriter and guitarist. He is an active member of the Brooklyn music scene, throwing fundraisers and organizing compilations for Planned Parenthood and the Anti-Violence Project. He started playing music in the underground punk scene of Shanghai with various local bands when he was in high school before going to California for college and finally moving to New York in 2012.

But while all that extra time and opportunity can certainly help musicians learn to home record, produce, and mix, it might set us off with some bad time management habits if we’re not careful. Sometimes having too much time, or too much choice in terms of what instruments or sounds to use can debilitate our focus and our sense of making the most out of our studio hours. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

All you have to do is click the box. Purple means the click will play; when it’s not purple, it won’t. I personally recommend that you record both your piano and vocals to a click track to make sure everything you might record later on is in time. It’ll also make mixing and processing that much easier.

The piece ends with the same texture we heard at the beginning, natural harmonics produced by sympathetic resonance (2:23). Only a tiny variation in the musical landscape pops up — a new note, D. Although this looks like an anomaly in the construction of the piece, in my opinion this choice makes total sense, considering that this work is a series of 11 pieces, the presence of another note creates a sense of directionality. Instead of the movements feeling like isolated fragments collected together, inserting a new note before this section ends offers a glimpse ahead, and a bit of connective tissue.

When we say that a piece of music is in a particular key, it means that it’s leaving out some of the notes. Bach’s chaconne is in D minor, so it only uses the notes D, E, F, G, A, B♭, and C. (And sometimes C# to add some drama to the chords.) That’s a more manageable number of notes to keep track of in your head. Also, they’re all related in a variety of nifty, simple mathematical ways. In D minor, you usually avoid using the notes E♭, G♭, A♭, and B. Those notes sound “wrong,” or in music theory terms, dissonant.

It’s called Modern Pop Vocal Production, and it’s designed to help you home-recording vocalists and producers get a richer, more dynamic, and harder-hitting sound on your vocal mixes. To find bands that might be a good fit, look up venues in your area that have capacities of around 200+, see who the headliners have been in the past, and pinpoint which ones usually open those shows. You can also scour local music blogs and publications. Once you’ve found a few bands you think you could work with, start making detailed lists. You want to make sure that your early efforts aren’t forgotten for future bookings.

And he spent a long time watching

So, if we’re capturing vocals, our vocalist would be in there. If we’re capturing an electric guitar, the guitar player would sit in that room with the guitar, his amp, and any microphones or lines out to capture the sound. Everything else, including noisy bandmates like myself, would be in the “control room.”

A short essay on why we should’ve never eaten the apple of industry-approved digital music streaming, and why the low-bitrate MP3 is all we really need.
