The form here is seemingly as sparse as the accompaniment, and it’s just about the most “organic” thing I’ve seen so far in this study. After eight bars of verse, he introduces what will be the refrain lines (you really can’t call it a chorus because it’s only two lines over four bars). But then there’s a big stretch of verse at a non-standard, “just-feeling-it-that way” 36 bars, and then, just cutting this dough with his fingernails (as in, no pre-made cookie-cutter shapes), Drake gives us six bars of the “my head is spinning” sample, followed by, for some reason, only one of the refrain lines? Then there’s eight more bars of the sample and, following that, a mammoth verse section weighing in at 56 bars. To close it out, we get that refrain/sample combo again, but this time it’s punctuated with the first refrain line, and then the next line. Pretty innovative organization.
The other option is to use a synth. Since the original 808 sound is synth-derived, we can do something similar. We want to have a pretty simple sound — think sine or triangle wave — and a drum-like envelope. If you’re not super familiar with synths, check out our free course series, Demystifying Synths.
There’s no formula for creating interesting percussion parts in Logic, so you’ll need to do plenty of experimenting. It’s also important to note that while having a solid source part to work off of is important, unpredictable or complex beats aren’t necessarily ones that will end up sounding interesting in your music. It’s incredible how a boring 4/4 kick-snare beat can be transformed with the right effects and approach.

In the story, Lulu is loved by many, but manipulates her lovers, moving from one to the next. At the height of her adoration, her fortunes begin to fall: she’s chased by the police, imprisoned, forced into prostitution, and then eventually murdered. To drive this musical and thematic symmetry home, Berg specified that the actors that play her first three lovers are the same actors that play her last three clients when she is a prostitute. This dramatic palindrome dovetails with the musical palindrome: Berg’s marriage of disturbing musical formalism with dramatic technique highlights Wedekind’s unearthing of the violence within patriarchal sexuality.
To collect these royalties, songwriters must be registered with a performing rights organization, or “PRO.” These organizations exist to track, collect, and distribute public performance royalties. The U.S. PROs include ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. In the UK, there’s PRS For Music, France has SACEM, Germany uses GEMA, and so on.

When you give people a chance to sign up for your mailing list, you’re automatically creating a filter for the people who will become your biggest fans and supporters. You can still target passive, part-time fans on social media and elsewhere, but the mailing list will remain a hub for active audiences. Sending out an email once every couple of months will set you apart from other bands and give your audience a sense that they’re connecting with you on a deeper level. So don’t forget to put out a nice looking sign-up sheet at your shows!

This is a crucial and often daunting step to take towards actually creating your podcast. If you’re not a very techy person, it’s extremely overwhelming even thinking about what microphone to buy, how to record, edit, and upload your podcast to your RSS feed. I’m going to make this as simple as I can so that you can go buy the correct gear and be confident it’ll do the trick.
“Stefano and I focused in on a couple things: the sound design of his digital strings, achieving simplicity and dynamism in the arrangement, and drawing out emotions through the piece. Stefano worked in the DAW rather than through notation, and so we played with realism by leaving the grid behind and allowing individual instruments to shine through. We also worked on simplifying elements of the arrangements, particularly the chordal and polyphonic textures, so that the main melodies felt clear and coherent.
Lauren Hill’s “Ex-Factor” is a timeless song that will always give me goosebumps. I danced around my living room to this song — lip syncing and wishing I was in a music video, wishing I could sing like her. Today there exists another artist, and another song, that encapsulates Lauryn Hill’s soul, but more contemporary, and that’s Lianna La Havas’ song “Green & Gold.”
