In case you haven’t seen this, or tried it yet, Classic FM (the website version) has created one of the most entertaining and informative tiny “time-waster” games on the internet that we’ve found so far. It’s called “Are These Words Composers or Types of Pasta” and it’s 15 questions of mouth-watering musical joy where you have to try to guess which is which. I’ve played this game thrice and somehow never gotten a perfect score.

By repeating the root note of the chord a few times, the bass part defines the underlying harmony (E minor to A major, two bars each), before continuing into a funky outline of the scale.

It can be used across so many genres of music, shown below on Oskar Offermann’s track, “Find Yourself.” He uses the Space Echo on the vocals and it seems to also be used on a lot of the percussion.

Whether you’re recording yourself or someone else, you’ll save time in the long run by getting lots and lots of takes. The most obvious reason for this is that musicians typically need a couple of run-throughs to start feeling comfortable and confident. But you also need to give yourself as many options as possible for splicing things together during the editing process, so you don’t have to go back in and record “punch-ins.” Re-recording is a time-waster; recording songs more than once the first time is a life-saver.

Pope Joy Hall houses many international acts. It’s the one place where you can see Irish dance, A Tribute to the Beatles, The Book of Mormon, or solo Jack White all under the same roof. Put it simply: The acts that perform here are usually world renowned and worth the ticket price.

Positive affirmation is lovely, but it sadly won’t sustain your career by itself. Criticism can be truly valuable and help you to improve. Secondly, criticism is going to happen whether you like it or not, so, since you can’t prevent it, let’s try to manage it.

Once you find a routine that works for you, stick to it. Even if something straight up goes against one of the other points in this article, if it works for you, keep using it! You know yourself better than anyone, so always be on the hunt for ways to streamline your own process and customize your workflow to suit your recording needs and priorities.

John Belushi struck up a relationship with Fear after becoming a quick fan seeing them on another TV show and commissioned them to write a song for the movie Neighbors. The band, however, wrote the song for Belushi himself to sing, which he recorded reluctantly. The movie’s producers refused to use it, but Belushi still wanted to do right by Fear, so he booked them on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest for the Halloween Special in 1981.

Once you’ve got everything booked and confirmed, it’s time to start promoting the show. Personally inviting people and making sure everyone posts and reposts on their social media is the bare minimum. This will let everyone’s fanbase know about the show. But if you’ve put together a truly special event, you’re going to need to branch out from your immediate networks.

Print out some hard copies, go to the venue, and hang them up there (or ask the venue to do that for you). Your poster in a venue’s window maximizes your chances of reaching foot traffic and audiences from other shows. But if you’re already printing posters, why not put them up in local businesses and stores as well? And make sure to hang some up at local colleges, band rehearsal spaces, or anywhere else you think you’d find people interested in music.

With a robust membership of over 725,000 composers, ASCAP is the only American PRO owned and operated by its members. It distributed $1.109 billion in royalties in 2018.

By the end of this mentored six-week experience, you’ll learn how to take raw ideas and turn them into the best possible sounding song. Some specific stops along the way include utilizing advanced harmony, rhythm, and bass; the difference between songs and productions; how successful songs are structured; creative strategies that you can apply to your own music; and how to revamp your workflow to emphasize the song’s emotive power and listenability.
