Natural overdrive can sound amazing in a punk song, so if you’re getting a tube amp don’t forget to crank the drive to see how you like the sound it produces. Otherwise, stick to pedals, and look for something big and tough enough to handle your tone (and the mosh pits). Here are some of my favorite choices for punk musicians:
Though this case ruled in Porter’s favor and spies were found to not, in fact, be in the equation, the decision set a major precedent for music copyright cases. First of all, this was the first of Arnstein’s several legal battles that had been taken seriously. He was somewhat of a “full-time plaintiff,” and by 1946 had already unsuccessfully attempted to sue ASCAP, BMI, and Twentieth Century Fox Film. Although he did ultimately lose his case against Porter, this case helped establish the two-pronged test to determine copyright infringement that is still used today: Courts must determine if the defendant copied the plaintiff’s work, and whether this copying constitutes substantial similarity between the two works.
Something like a well-placed delay or reverb can add unbelievable character to a percussion part. Since your kicks, snares, toms, and hi-hats are each isolated, you have the power to add effects your entire kit as well as individual instruments. Depending on the character of the track you’re building, these effects allow you to construct drum parts that are clear and driving, or ambient and unpredictable.

At some point, Hein compares learning music to learning the English language. In music education you are given so so much information before you’re asked to turn it into something creative, if ever. In contrast, when you learn a language, by the second grade you’re already being asked to write stories and communicate creative ideas; it’s instant expression from the moment we begin our journey.

The loop motifs all sound to me like they’re only two beats, phrase-wise. Form-wise, it’s just one rimfire cartridge, one gunpowder-filled 120-ish-bar capital V Verse. Pow.

Nice work. This idea of changing melody with changes in lyric is called topic movement and it’s a winning technique for stopping endless lists of lyrics with no direction that can really clog up your listeners’ ears. Professor Andrea Stolpe, of USC’s Thornton School of Music, expands on this below.
Seriously — it’s so easy to think you know a song perfectly, but then suddenly you have to play it with headphones on and an annoying click in your ear and the whole thing falls apart. When you’re practicing, try to replicate the environment you’ll encounter at your recording studio as much as possible. It’ll help worlds when you actually get in there.

Eventually, the bass line drops down an octave and changes its stubborn pedaling to play chord tones along with the rest of the rhythm section. It starts with the same old D and A. Next, it moves to C♯ and A for the A chord. Then it moves to the B chord but still keeps the pressure on with that non-chord-tone A. Finally, it rounds off with a pleasant, resolute walk-up, bouncing back up between notes of the major scale and A, which is the root of the chord. Classic!

Our editor Jeremy actually recommended I write about this one and, boy, did he choose a good one. This video of the grunge gods, Nirvana, performing at the Video Music Awards, starts off with “Rape Me,” which they were told not to play at the event. After the show, Krist Novoselic threw his bass up in the air and hit himself in the head with it. Then, the band pulled a Who and got destructive with Dave Grohl running to the mic and calling out, “Hi, Axl!” to Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose.
It is generally recommended that you hire different engineers to do your mixing and mastering, or at least use different sound systems. One stage focuses on the combination of individual elements and the other focuses on the sound as a whole. One looks at trees, the other at the forest.
